Altar and Rosary Society

Altar & Rosary Circle Duties

Vigil Lights:

The glass vigil light holders need to be cleaned on a weekly basis.  A member of the Vigil Light Committee (Lucie Bergthold, Theresa Kopatich) will remove the dirty glass holders on Saturday of each week.

The holders are then placed in a box designated for vigil lights and a sign on the top will ready “dirty”.  These boxes are placed in two canvas bags and are in the cabinet in the room to the right of the altar.  This room is up the steps from the East side door.

The cleaning instructions are included with the boxes.

  • Line cookie sheet with newspaper.
  • Place vigil light holders upside down on the newspaper.
  • Place in oven at a low temperature.
  • Wipe out the votive holders and place back in the box.
  • Discard any holders that are cracked or broken.

Return the votive boxes with the sign turned to “clean” and place back in the cupboard before the next Friday.  This means you have approximately one week to complete the task.

Donut Sunday:

This is a parish activity that occurs every Sunday after the 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Masses in Denning Hall.  The Altar & Rosary Society is responsible for the “first” Sunday of the month.  The Circle that is assigned a particular month will be responsible for providing workers to serve after each Mass and clean up after the lass Mass.

The donuts, milk, and orange juice are delivered early that morning by Hy-Vee.  The invoice should be saved, and when all the money is collected, place it in a paper cup with the cash and store it in a cupboard. Father will pick it up later.

There should be two serving tables set up outside the kitchen in Denning Hall and all the beverages, donuts, and paper products will be placed there for self-serve by attendees.

  • Arrive around 7:00 a.m. to make coffee (regular and decaf).  See instructions on the coffee makers.  If a full pot is made of each kind, there should be enough for both Masses.
  • Right before serving, put the coffee in the insulated coffee carafes.  Clear plastic pitchers are used for serving orange juice, milk, and ice water.
  • Place donuts onto plastic serving trays after cutting them in half.
  • Coffee cups and napkins will be available in the kitchen.
  • Put collection baskets at the end of each of the serving tables for donations.
