ST. PAUL THE APOSTLE PARISH TOWN HALL MEETING - JULY 10, 2010

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
As an individual parish, St. Paul the Apostle recognizes several strong points upon which to plan for and build our future:
  • We have a strong school with increasing enrollment currently facing the need to expand its facilities.
  • We have an active RCIA process which helps to grow the parish.
  • We are in preparation for a parish-wide mission to help bring us together and reignite the faith which will guide us into the future.
  • We, as a parish, DO CARE about the condition of the Church and about our ability to respond to the needs of our parishioners and the community in the years ahead.

Our concern for the future of the Church (local and diocesan) expresses itself in:

  • A fear that the diminishing number of active priests will be chiefly expressed as a diminishment of sacramental and pastoral services to the people - at the very time when the need for these services seems to be more evident.
  • That active planning for a diminishment of priestly services could be seen as “planning to fail” rather than a challenge to thrive.
  • A concern for how to get more people effectively and commitedly involved in meeting the needs of the Church.
  • A concern that the local planning process thus far seems not to have brought anything significantly new or constructive to the table. It appears that the recommendations in the Preliminary Plan only appear to slow an inevitable loss rather than to marshal re-sources for a fresh beginning.
  • A reluctance to change if this is true.

While there was no enthusiastic consensus for adoption of the preliminary Plan what we have achieved in our parish is:

  • A willingness to proceed with the Preliminary Plan, while still challenging the Central Coordinating Council for our cluster of parishes to put more effort into giving us direction for how to grow and collaborate in effective ways to meet the needs of the people.
  • A sense of determination that, as an individual parish, we will continue to make every effort possible to meet our challenges with strong faith, firm hope and patient charity with one another.
  • A recognition that our own highest priority centers on Evangelization and the continuing call to the fullness of Stewardship.
  • The need not to succumb to fear or doubt, but to remain confident in faith.
